Iridian designs and manufactures custom wavelength selective windows and transceiver filters to improve the signal to noise in these systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commercial Satcom networks will consist of constellations of 100\u2019s to 1000\u2019s of satellites in an interconnected low earth orbit (LEO) mesh. Many of these systems rely on optical intersatellite link (OISL) architecture to connect satellites via laser based optical communications. Optical filters provide wavelength selectivity to these systems addressing different functional needs from solar rejection windows to wavelength selective signal clean-up filters and beam splitting\/combining dichroic filters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solar Rejection Windows (SRW)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allow the transmission of the OISL communication band (typically around 1550nm) between satellites while blocking the background solar radiation, providing improved signal-to-noise while helping minimize solar heating inside the satellite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typical SRW optical filter performance requirements include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high transmittance in signal band<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>typically 1550nm; wavelength is customizable\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">broad deep blocking of solar spectrum<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">typically large (up to 150mm diameter) windows<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low transmitted wavefront error (TWE)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/iridian.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Chart-Optical-Satcom-Lights-the-Way.png&#8221; title_text=&#8221;Chart &#8211; Optical Satcom Lights the Way&#8221; align=&#8221;center&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;chart&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; width=&#8221;75%&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Dichroic Beam Splitters\/Combiners<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> enable the receiver to selectively receive specific wavelength bands of interest.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These may be used as stand-alone clean-up filters or in series to direct different signals to different detectors in the optical train.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typical Dichroic filter requirements include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high transmittance (Tx) and high reflection (Rx)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">steep edges to provide a sharp transition from Tx to Rx<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may need to preserve polarization (for QKD encryption signals<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/iridian.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/SATCOM-Chart-1.png&#8221; title_text=&#8221;SATCOM Chart 1&#8243; align=&#8221;center&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;CHART&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; width=&#8221;70%&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Band-pass \u201cClean-up\u201d Filters<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ensure high signal to noise in the transmitted and received signal bands (often two or more wavelength bands carrying signal).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typical Band-pass filter requirements include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">narrow bandwidth (FWHM or passband)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high Tx and high Rx \u2013 maximizing isolation of channels from each other<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>steep edges to provide a sharp transition from Tx to Rx<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low TWE<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/iridian.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/SATCOM-Chart-2.png&#8221; title_text=&#8221;SATCOM Chart 2&#8243; align=&#8221;center&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;chart 3&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; width=&#8221;70%&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><b>Space Heritage<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iridian has produced individual filters and multi-spectral elements that have been tested and qualified for a range of orbits and space environments.
